TABLE TALK.

Monday Evening. Last Tuesday evening an exhibition of sketches was opened at the Art Gallery Hall. The president and councillors of the Otago Art Society had issued invitations for the occasion, and there was a'gcod attendance. The president (Mr Joachim) gave a short address, mentioning that it was the first exhibition of the kind held in connection with the Otago Art Society. The commiteeo ware very much pleased by the way in which members had responded to the request to exhibit their sketches. Wright, “Redroofs,” has returned from the north. Mrs C. Reid (Christchurch) is staying with Mrs Sise, Queen street. 'Miss Sis-o returned from Invercargill last week. General Sir Charles and Dady Burnett (India) are staying with Mr and Mrs Burnett, Royal terrace. Miss Hosking has gone for a trip Sydney. Mrs W. Bond (Waikaia) is staying in town-. Mies K. Ulrich has gone to Timaru to vV« friends. Miss S-caifo has returned from her holiday in the country. INVERCARGILL, May 2». On Monday evening ■ the members of th« Ladies’ Bridge Club met at the house of Mrs Eyre, Don street. Mrs Sharp, Spey -street, gave a very enjoyable bridge evening on Wednesday. The game was progressive, and was placed at seven tables. First prizes were won ’ey Mrs * H. Macdonald and Mrs L. Raymond. Mr® J. Carswell gave a kitchen tea 1 in Millar’s Tea Rooms on Thursday afternoon for Miss G. Young, who is shortly to be married. Mrs Carswell received her guests in the grill room, where afternoon tea was served. There was a large gathering of Miss Young’s friends, each of whom brought a suitable gift for tbs kitchen, and the opening of the parcels caused great amusement. On Thursday evening Miss Robinson, Etirick -street, gave a progressive euchre party as a farewell to Miss Logan, who is shortly leaving for Wellington. The first prizes were won by Miss Totlrill and Mr Sise. On Friday afternoon Mrs Tucker, G-ala street, gave an afternoon tea for Miss Logan. Mrs Christophers. Tweed street, 1 gave a small bridge evening on the same day. The second annual children’s plain and fancy dress party was held on Saturday afternoon and evening in the A ictoria Ha.II under the auspices of the committee of the Plunket Nurse Society. The committee had worked hard and. with great enthusiasm to make the function a successful one, and the results must have been most gratifying. The event had been eagerly anticipated by scores of little folk, -and considerably over 100 children must have been present. As great many spectators and parents were present, and the hall was fairly crowded. Tho , grand march, in which all the children took part, was quite a brilliant sight. Great taste and ingenuity was shown in the various costumes, of which there was a bewildering diversity. There were cavaliers and courtiers, dainty little ladies of almost every century, butterflies and flowers, witches and fairies, gipsies and Red Riding-hc-ods. Red Indians. Maoris, Japs, cowboys, cooks, Pierrots rnd Picrettea, peasants of all nations, bluobeards, Circassians, Turkish ladies, jockeys, and huntsmen, etc. A dainty little 'French Marquise and a tiny little" page were, much admired. Tire time passed very quickly with various games and ' dances till 10 o’clock, when the party broke up. The tea and supper tables were prettily decorated with yellow chrysanthemums and asparagus fern. The proceeds of this entertainment -should -substantially benefit the funds of the society. Mrs Vickars (Pkto-n) is the guest of Mrs James Hendry (Gladstone). Miss M’Gillivray has returned from a visit . to Canterbury.

Mrs F. MJorrah (Gladstone) is visiting Dunedin. Mr and Mrs Menlove (Mossburn) are staying in Invercargill. The Royal Hawaiians played _ here on Monday night to_a most enthusiastic audience, and the performers must, have been verv pleased at the number of encores they received. Among the audience were Mrs Douglas, Mrs Buckley, Mrs Darling, Dr and Mrs' Orbell, Miss Maude, Miss Murdoch, Miss Whitton, Miss Bamford, Mrs Sutton, Mr "and Mrs M'Donald, Miss Jones, Mr Hutchison, Mr Murdoch, Mr Sharland, Mr Babington, Mr Jones,-Mr Bulleid. The winter meeting of the Jockey Club was held on Wednesday and Thursday. The weather on both days was very cold, and this kept a number of townspeople away, but far all that there was a very good attendance. Visitors to the raoes were Mr and Mrs H. Knight (Christehurch), Mr W. Buckley (Christehurch), Miss MacDonald (Christehurch), Mr H. Elworthy (Tiinaru), Mr, Mrs, and Miss M'Master. (Tokarahi), Mr and Mrs 6. Iveid (Christehurch), Sir Gecrgo Clifford (Christehurch), Mr and Mrs J. F. Reid (Burhside), Mr and Mrs B. SethSmith (Chrifltchurch), Mr C. Pitman, and Mr H. Hanmer (Hampden), Mr and Mrs Allan Orbell (Waikouaiti). On Wednesday night a committee of ladies, composed of. Mrs C. Sutton, Mrs Woodward, Miss J. Gilchrist, and Miss N Nicl.oUs, stave a very nice dance at th» Druids' Hall. Among the guests were Mrs and Muss M'Master, Dr, Mrs, and Miss Whitton, Mr and Mrs B. Seth-Smith, Mrs Hjorring, .Mr and Mrs Swindley, Mr and Mrs Davy a Miae Sinclair, Miss Bamford, Misses Piper (3), Miss Sumpter, Miss Nicholls, Miss Bradshaw, Miss Davis, Miss Howden, Mt and Mrs J. Fraser. Miss Hutchison, Miss Jamieson, Messrs Jackson, Ivine, Jones, Sharland, Maude, Babington, Davis, Hanmer, Piper, M'Master, etc. Mrs Buckley gave a small dinner party at Bedcastle on Friday in honour of Colonel and Mrs Gcdley. Mrs George Morton gave a delightful afternoon tea on Tuesday in honour of her daughter, Mts H. Reeve, of Auckland. Tea was served in the dining room, the tablet being prettily arranged with whito chrysanthemums and maidenhair. Mrs Merton wore a gown of pale green and white figured silk and cream lace; Mrs Reeve, black chiffon frock with hand-painted design of pink and pale blue roses; Miss Merton, pale pink crepe de chine and ecru lace; Mrs Wigram, black serge costume, ermine toque and stole; Mrs Allen, black silk ooat and skirt, black musquash tcque, musquash stole and muff; Mans Stevenson, black velvet coat and skirt, large black hat with pale bhie ostrich feathers; Mrs J. The guests included Judge and Mrs Denniston, Mrs Turton (Dunedin), Mrs Wilding, Mr and- Mrs Wyinks, Mrs Baker, Mr and Mrs W. Wood, Misses Wyinks, Wood, M'lntyre, Symes, Nancarrow, and Messrs Nan'carrow, Wood, Wilding, and Dr O'Brien. Miss Souper (Emgland) is the guesi of Mrs Anderson, Opawa. Miss Russell is visiting Wanganui. Mrs Rolleston (Rangitata) and Miss Rolleston are living at Mrs* Nicholls's house in Mansefield avenue, Mrs Nicholls having gone on a, visit to Japan. Mirsi Turton (Dunedin) is the guest of Mrs Denniston, Rolleston avenue.

Giahame Morris, of Koroniiko, the eldest eon of Mr and Mrs Alex. Morris, Wellington. WELLINGTON, May 27. On Wednesday .afternoon the opening took place of the Industrial Exhibition. It is most attractive and interesting, and has been very wall patronised both day and night. There are some fine pictures in the art gallery, and a wonderful collection of old curios. Mrs TennaTit and her children leave for Dannevirko on Tuesday, where they will in future live. Mrs G. Waddy (Blenheim) is the guest of Miss Biaber. Mrs Russell Adams (Blenheim) is in Wellington for a few days this week. Mrs Marsh and family ispent a few days in Wellington prior to leaving for Dunedin on Saturday. Mr 'and Mrs John Nesbet (London) left for Dunedin on Tuesday, after spending a week in Wellington. . Miss Butts has returned from her visit to Hawke'-s Bay. Mrs S. Brandon is the guest of Mrs J. P. Brandon. Mrs T. ?dacfarlane, nee Miss Bremner (Wellington), who, for the last three y&ars has Jived in South Africa, is at present on a. visit to London, accompanied by her little son. The engagement has been announced this \;eek of Miss Kate Kirkcaldie, daughter of Mr John Kirkcaldie, to Mr 0. Mirams, son of Mr F. H. Mirams (Dunedin). Mrs Lysaght is the guest of Mrs Stone. Mrs Hogben is at present on a visit to Christchuirch.

Mr Prank Dyer is spending a few weeks in Napier. A little play, "The Lunch that Failed"" written and arranged for the stage by Mrs Corliss, was acted at the Pioneer Club on Saturday evening before members of the club. Those taking part were Mm Sutcliffe, Miss Newton, V. Corliss, Miss Longford, and Miss S. Putnam. AUCKLAND, May 24. The largest winter show yet held in Auckland is at present in progress: the catalogue shows over 200 classes, and about 780 entries. One of the most interesting sections is that devoted to the Jubilee Institute for the Blind. There one can see the blind students at their work—reading, writing, typewriting, making baskets, knitting stockings by machinery, and many other different kinds of work. A novel feature .also is the exhibition of Persian cats and kittens, the property of Miss Mulgan, of Kemuera. Mr H. P. Murray-Aynsley and Miss Murray-Aynsley (Christchurch) were passengers to Auckland by the New Zealand Shipping Company's fine new steamer Rotorua, but returned to the south yesterday. Mjiss Brenda Stook (Wellington) is at present in Auckland, and is staying at "Cargen." A pleasant tea party was that given at "Taiamai," in St. Stephen's avenue, by the Misses Nora and May Schwartz Kissling on Friday afternoon of last week. It was a beautiful day, and the view from the verandahs across the harbour was to be obtained in all its perfection. Amongst those present Were Mrs Percy Williams in a green striped suit, and black hat; Miss Beal, black velvet frock banded with black silk braid, and large black hat with pink roses; Miss "Muriel Da.rgaville, white cloth suit, and large black hat; Mrs Cross (Christchurch), green velvet with black velvet finishings, and large black hat with feathers; Miss Stock (Wellington), black suit and smart blaok hat; the Misses Thorpe (2), Mrs Houghton. Miss Keuderdine, Mrs Lucas Bloomfield, Miss Thelma Bloomheld, Miss Una Saunders, Mrs Arnold. Miss Ethlia Pierce, Mrs Herbert Kissling, Miss Amy Moss, Miss Stevenson, and Mrs Cole, etc. During the afternoon Mrs Cole sang in her usual finished ' style; and Miss Stock, of Wellington, gave one or two items on the piano.
