THE MONOWAI'S ESCAPE.
A SENSATIONAL INCIDENT. NAPIER, May 11. While steaming down the coast this morning between Gisborne and Napier the steamer Monowai had a somewhat narrow -escape from being wrecked. The weather was thick and a heavy mist hung over the sea. Her position was regarded as perfectly" secure, when suddenly the mist temporarily cleared, and it was seen that the vessel was heading towards the shore, on which the breakers were plainly visible. The Monowai was then about a quarter of a mile from the land, but the engines were reversed, and after proceeding about a mile out to sea she headed towards Napier, and arrived without any unusual delay.
