As an indication of the number of penguins to be found at Macquarie Island. Mr Hatch said in a lecture at Invercargill that during the summer there was daylight at the island for 22 hours, and that for the whole of that time penguins passed at the rate of 400 per minute after the moulting Reason. Penguins were not being exterminated as a result of the oil industry, but were, on the contrary, increasing rapidly. M. Stemmer, a St. Petersburg postagestamp collector, paid £2500 for five duplicates of a set in his possession which he had believed to be unique, and then burnt them, so that his set should remain unique after all.
