GOLF.

BY BOLGEP. The first qualifying round for tha Otago Club's Championship was played on Saturdal, when, no doubt owing to the oppressive weather conditions, the scores were by no means good. The best cards handed in wore C. A. Turnbull, R. J. Smith, and B. J. Smith, who completed the round in 81. Turnbull stands well in for the Smith Cup, a much coveted trophy in connetion with this competition, which is decided on the beet aggregate gross score for the two qualifying rounds. It is much regretted that Mao Ewan, the holder, is unable tooompete this year owing to ill-health. The second round will be played next Saturday. The 16 returning the best aggregate for the two rounds will then decide the Championship by match play during the next few weeks. A friendly match is to be played at St. Clair on Anniversary Day (Thursday), between teams from the Otago and St. Clair clubs. Tournaments will be held during Easter at Christchurch, New Plymouth, and Inveroargili.
