BY BUIGEF. Monthly competitions (stroke) at Balmacewen on Saturday, sth irnst. Under the arrangement with the Christchurch Club J. A. Clements-takes up tihd duties of coach for the ensuing four months at Balmacewcm. Otago members are fortunate in securing the services of this young professional, and no doubt appreciate the courtesy of the Chrisfcchureh Club and the foresight of their own executive in this matter. Clements has arrived at Balmacewen, and should have a full book during his temporary residence. The Otago Championship, played for at the New Year tournament of the Otago Club, will this year be decided by match plav. The conditions governing the match are*:—Two qualifying rounds (stroke play). The 16 players returning the best scores to play off by match play over 18 holes. .Hitherto the championship has been decided on four rounds medal play, owdnj? mainly to the time being limited. The match play conditions this year are, I have no doubt, more in the nature of an, experiment, as the four rounds sbroke plays do not find favour with the majority of competitors. Rain is badly wanted at St. Clair, the links being very hand and dry. The permanent greens have been spelling for some considerable time, but have not derived much benefit, owing to the continued drought. It is singularly unfortunate for the St. Clair Club that this should be such a dry spring, as copious rains are required to brinrx on the young grass which was sown on the ground recently acquired' by the club for the purpose of extending the links. It was hoped that th enow ground would bo ready for play in the autumn, but I am afraid this will bo out of the question now.

Playing the home hole, 343 yards, en the Westport golf links the other day, Mr Brerton put up a record that is not likely to be equalled in a hurry. His drive from the tee was about 200 yards,. and from thei-e he holed out with his next shot, a distance of 143 yards.
