LATE SPORTING.

V.R.C. SPRING MEETING. COMEDY KING WINS THE CUP. Prws Association—By Telegraph —Copyright. FLEMINGTON, November 1. (Received November 1, at 6.30 p.m.) This year'e Cup meeting will long remain memorable in the club's annals. It was fitting that the occasion of the club's jubilee Cup attracted one of the biggest gatherings on record. The city is already over-crowded. The inter-State boats during tho week brought 5000 people, including 1000 from- Now Zealand and TavSmania. The -weather, which was unpromising on the owning day. cleared this morning, and pleased everybody, and the brilliant sunshine, bright sky,- and gentle southerly conditions could not have been improved on. On the lawns an hour before the first race started there was not standing room, while the betting ring and paddock were crowded to suffocation. More than the usual interest, too, was taken in the racing. The extraordinary reversals of form shown among the threc-yelar-olds eg compared with Randwick and Caulfield left even the best judges baffled. The performance of Comedy King, Timami, Alawa, Parsee, and especially the New Zealand mare Artillerie, left the public in a state of perplexity. The only really consistent performance was Trafalgar, who held first place in the public favour.' while another Zealander, Lady Lucy, had hosts of aornirers. In the vice-regal box, in the midst of the most gorgeous gathering, were Lord and Lady Dudley, Sir T. Gibson-Carmichael, Lady Gibson Carmichael. Admiral Boeanquet, Lady Bosanquet, Sir Richard and Lady Poore, and their large staffs. 'When the horses went to the post every point was, occupied, and thousands saw nothing until the horses were finishing. Comedy King always had a good place in the Melbourne Cup, and put in fast work at the right time. Alawa galloped better than on- any previous occasion, and at on? time was proclaimed a winner. Intense excitement prevailed when Trafalgar came at Comedy King, who, contesting stride for stride along the straight, just managed to win. ArtilTerio was again disappointing, running all the way in the ruck in comj pany with Lady Lucy. j The following are the results : CUP HURDLE RACE, Of 300a>vs; second 60sovs and third 3&-ovs. Two miles.
