DUNEDIN D.L.F. LITERARY AND DEBATING CLUB.

Motto: " Union is Strength." The usual weekly meeting *of the abova club was held on Tuesday, May 31, J9lO. There was a very good attendance of D.L.F. awing to it being show week, and there being so many country D.L.F. in, town. There were sc many that I did not get their noms-de-plume, but a very cordial reception was extended to all the country

D.L.F. It being "Open Meeting," the following contributed:—Blue Violet, "Life of Queen Victoria." This was a very interesting paper. Larkspur contributed a very humorous reading entitled "Great Aunt Sally." Texas Jack gave us an impromptu discourse on "Explosives." He told us how all the different explosives were manufactured. It was a very interesting disccurse, and brought Texas Jack out in an altogether different light, as he does not give us such weighty, dangerous contributions aa a rule, confining his contributions to the humorous. He brought specimens of some of the different explosives, and offered at tine end of his short address to prove his statement that gelignite burns quite quietly in the open air by igniting a piece he had with him about 4in long and the thickness of a candle! We are apt to believe Texas Jack when he makes statements; even his stories are good enough to be true—but, well, this dangerous piece of gelignite "was too much for us, and Dot begged Texas Jack to defer his experiment. Arete contributed an original paper on "Books." The meeting then closed, and tho Social Committee met to make final arrangements about the socia l . Owing to lack of time I have not extracted from the different papers,- but am sending in Blue Violet's "Life of Queen Victoria" to be published. Club members send their sincerest sympathy to Giulia in her bereavement. Many of them know how devotedly she has watched over the sister who has been taken frorn her. And they rejoice with Lavinia on the great improvement that has taken plaoe in her sister's health. Owing to there being no quorum the two previous meetings were not held. ARETA, Acting Secretary).
