LAWN TENNIS.
THE DAVIS CUP. TO BE PLAYED FOR AT WELLINGTON. WILDING MAY NOT COMPETE. (From Our Own Correspondent.) WELLINGTON, April 22. I understand on good authority that it has been definitely decided that the next contest for the Davis Cup will be held in Wellington. This decision has been come to not by the committee of the New Zealand Lawn Tennis Association, but by the Davis Cup 'Committee for Australasia. The reasons that weighed with the committee in making the selection were no doubt mainly financial and geographical. Wellington, from its central position and the large number of clubs in the city, suburbs, and surrounding -country, extending up the West Coast to Wanganui on the one hand and up the East Coast to Napier on the other, will be the least likely of any place to make a financial loss. A large attendance of players and other interested in the game over this wide area is practically assured, while Auckland (now that the Main Trunk rai'way is running) and Nelson will also send their contingents of onlookers. The management of the contest will be in the hands of the committee of the New Zealand Lawn Tennis Association. There is a rumour in circulation that owing to the selection of Wellington Wilding may not be a competitor, but the general opinion is that he is too much of a sport to back down under such circumstances. However, if he does not play, the contest would still be a keen one, for another man, or even two, could be selected from amongst the best Australian and New Zealand players who would give any challengers likely to come out here a big run for the coveted cup.
