VETERINARY QUERIES.
[Answered by a duly qualified Veterinary Surgeon. Queries must be received by MONDAY: night to ensure reply in the succeeding issue.]
Hawke's Bay writes to say that six pigs in a yard Louse were apparently in good health from weaners to baconers. Three were sold, as baconers, the other three not being- quite heavy enough. These three were, fed a little heavier than formerly on skim. milk. They suddenly went off their feed and l became costive. Potatoes, turnips, cabbages, and grass were tried, but they would not eat. The throat, breast, belly, and inside the four legs became very yellow, and they partially lest power in their front feet. Within 14 days all three died. Two at death showed a little white foam at the mouth. Pigbreeders in this locality know of nothing like this. Can you explain ? Answer: Without having bad the opportunity of making a post-mortem examination, it is impossible to say what your pigs died of. Probably it was from disease of the liver, which might be caused by parasites. Puzzled.—Probably your cats may have died from the Strongylua faleria-, a small thread-like worm which is found in birds, and may exist in other animals, blocking up the bronchial tubes in the lungs, which, if in sufficient numbers, may cause suffocation. That might be one way in which your pets became infected. Subscriber, Otiake. —'Your description of the wcund on your horse's leg and how you have been treating it is very meagre. You might try the following:—i Dust the wound with iodiform ldr, salicylic acid Soz, and chalk loa. Dust on the wound and cover with lint with a calico bandage over it. In a few days remove it, and, if necessary, repeat the .dressing.
