GALE IN THE NORTH.

SHIPPING DELAYED

GISBORNE, April 25. A severe southerly gale has been raging since noon on Saturday, and a tremens dous sea is running along the east coast. The Tarawera, which passed East Cape at 11 a.m. on Sunday, and the Rangatira, from Auckland, due yesterday afternoon, have not yet put in an appearance here, and are probably standing out to sea- till the weather moderates. There has been a slight washaway on the railway line near the Gisborne wharf. The gale is now abating and the sky* is clearing. The schooner Oteti is ashore at Tokoma.ru, not at Tuparoa as announced earlier. It is reported from Tuparoa that the schooner Oreti, late Waratah (when she used to trade to Dunedin from Kaipara), bound from Auckland to Gisborne, was driven ashore by the gale. The crew are safe, and the vessel is believed to be um injured. The wire being down, no fur-* ther particulars are available. NAPIER, April 25. A phenomenally heavy sea is runningr in the bay, and the Tarawera, from the north, is holding off pending its mode-* rating. AUCKLAND, April 25. The steamer Maheno was delayed by bad weather, and did not arrive from Sydney until 11 o'clock last night, too late to connect with the Wellington express. The southern mails will leave by train to-night.
