TAIERI COUNTY.

DRAINAGE BOARD AND COUNCIL. 'A letter from the Taieri Drainage Board 760x3 before the Taieri County Council fia Friday caused some disoussion. The board wrote asking if the council flrould be willing to take the material from »n excavation to make a road formation. The Chairman (Cr Blackie) was of opinion that the matter should be left in iris and the engineer's hands. Cr Freeman objected to this. This" gravel might be cheap enough just now, but it might prove a very expensive item Jater on. The level of the road had been idtered by the displacement of this gravel, and to take the material at all would be to countenance the alteration of the county road levels by the Drainage Board. If the council required gravel, let it be procured elsewhere. Let the Drainage Board >nd the County Council keep to their Jespective spheres. j£ was then moved—" That the chairman

and engineer be authorised to take legal advice as to whether, in the event of a bridge being necessary at this crossing, the removal oi this material would prejudice the county's interests; and, if not, the council to purchase up to 1000 cubic yards of the gravel at th© rate of Is 3d a yard." Cr Freeman said that in a legal dispute the whole country would be implicated. If it only concerned a single riding he would not so strongly object. He moved as an amendment-" That the proposal be not entertained." This was seconded by Cr Docherty, and lost. The motion was carried.
