CHRISTCHURCH CITY COUNCIL.
TROUBLE WITH WORKMEN. CHRISTCHURCH, April 19. A largely attended .-meeting of the General Labourers' Union was held tonight to consider the action of the City Council in last night refusing to admit! a deputation from the union on behalf of the labourers employed by the council, who were alleged to have a grievance re hours and wages and payment for holidays. It was decided to send back the same deputation to the next meeting of the council. The chairman stated that if the council refused to receive the deputation a second time, the workers ehould take action to make the names of councillors stink in the nostrils of ratepayers throng-bout New Zealand. Mr Paterson, secretary of the union, stated that if the council refused to receive the deputation, he was prepared to assist in forcing a way in to the council chamber in defence of his constitutional rights, and compel the council to listen to the deputation, even if the members of it were removed by the police.
