ELECTION OF CHAIRMAN. ASHBURTON, April 22. A special meeting of the Hospital -and Charitable Aid Board was held "to-day, at which Dr Valintine was present The question of the validity of the election of the chairman was dealt with. Ml Hugo Friedlander had been elected chairman at the first meeting of - the board, held on April' 1, on the casting vote o*. the returning officer, Mr Henry; Davis. The other candidate protested, and the matter was referred to Dr Valintine for decision j :" ~ Dr Valintine had replied stating that the election was invalid. After fully discussing the matter to-day, Dr Valintine eaid there was- no doubt the procedure regarding the election of Mr Friedlande* was questionable in the strict terms ol the act, according to his interptefation, but section 129 of thf! act furnished an absolute promise for 'the settlement- of the difficulty, .and he would strongly, suggest that Mr Friedlander should tinue to occupy the chair as the recognised elected chairman of the board pending the pleasure of his .Excellency,'
