SYDNEY, April 24. e Hon. J. A. Millar. Minister of rays for New Zealand, left for home rday by the Moana. or to his departure he gave a news- • representative some of his impresof Australia. He emphasised the table kindness that had been exd to him everywhere. Any man, he •ed, might be proud to live in any B States he had visited, but he was back to the best little State of the I lot. He was sure that people had [her average level of comfort in New
Zealand, and the average man could get along better there. j He was much struck with the enormous progress made in -Australia since he visited it ten years ago. He thought they had a healthier climate in New Zealand, and that they were breeding a better race. He did not find the Australians any smarter /than. the New Zealanders, and he thought the latter were as bright in the head as the Australians. Australia was a great, country, but he had seen nothing to shake his convictions that New Zealanders had the best country to live in. April 25. As a result of his inquiries, Mr Millar found that New Zealand railway freight rates and passenger fares are 15 per cent.' and 10 per cent, lower respectively than those of Australia, while in the Dominion the railways paid higher wages. From what he had heard in Australia the railways under the management of commissioners did not succeed in pleasing all ; parties any more than did Ministerial management.
