THE NEWCASTLE STRIKE.
! BKISBANE, April 20. Mr Sinclair, the Victorian Commercial agent in the East, -has arrived here. He states that the Newcastle strike has had a very undesirable effect on Aus- ! tralian trade in the East, and many of the Eaitern coal importers have transferred their business to other countries. ; It will, he says, be a long time before the prejudicial effects of the strike are removed. Nevertheless, there is a growing improvement in the general trade with Australia. The rubber boom was : causing the planting of rubber trees to be pushed ahead with feverish activity in the Malay States, Java. Borneo, and elsewhere in the tropics, and many , millions of foreign money were invested.
