At a.sitting of;the Court today the application of the Westport Coal Company for a lease of what is generally known as Cook's »».; coal .which adjoins the company s Denniston property was considered, an objection being hea.-d from Mr Wilson, on behalf.:of-Westenra, Of AKaroa, a member of a' ■ syndicate formerly interested in the lease The objection was made that by granting the lease would give the Westport Coal Company a monopoly of the first-class bituminous coal in the district. The warden decided to recommend the Minister to grant the application.. He said ho did not believe it meant creating a monopoly, and eaid there was no guarantee, if the application were, refused, that money could otherwise be raised to develop the lease. Mr Dixon, superintendent of the Westport Coal Company, said that his conipany could be producing coal from tie lease in three, weeks, as their preset tram hues were now right on the boundary of the lease.
