PHILHARMONIC SOCIETY.

The following report was presented to members of the Philharmonic Society at the annual meeting:— "In submitting the sixth annual report your committee can look back on the past season with every satisfaction. The strength of tho orchestra has been well maintained throughout the year, and the rehearsals have been very satisfactorily attended, and on this point more than any other rests the success of the society> for unless the nriemhtori; attend the practices regularly that state of perfection to which we all aspire cannot be reached. " The society, as usual, gave four concerts, the principal works performed during the year being the ever-popular ' 1812' (Tschaikowsky) and 'The Battle of Poltawa' by the same composer. 'II Prof eta ' (Meyerbeer), ' Overture No. 1 in C Minor ' (Foroni), ' Fourth tSymphonie, Italian ' (Mendelssohn), intermezzo ' Pan-und-Echo' (Sibelius), overture 'La Forza del Destine.' (Verdi), Symphonie ' Pathetique in B Minor' (Tschaikowsky), ' Third Movement Danza Originate' (Celega). ' Second Entracte from the music, to Nero'. (ColeridgeTaylor), prelude ' Lohengrin ' (Wagner), and piano concerto ' No. 1 in B Flat Minor' (Tschaikowsky). ■■■'■' - » • "■ To our hon. conductor (Signer Scmarise) we are greatly indebted, and few.realise tho va6t amount of work he does for the society, but we know "he feels fully repaid! . if the members will show their aprpeciatioh of his efforts by regular attendance, at the •rehearsals. The conductor's one aim is to nlace the society second to none in New Zealand, and that can only be attained by the hearty co-operation of every member. " The society desires to express its thanks to Mr Max Scherek for his kindness in presenting the society with the ' Piano Concerto No. 1 in B Flat Minor' (Tschaikowsky), and for his kindness in playing the ' Piano'Concerto ' at the fourth concert. To Mr J. D. M'Kechnie we are also indebted for presenting: to the society the intermezzo j 'Le Deluge' (Saint-Saens). To Mr A. I Cillies for presenting- the society with ! Liszt's ' Rhapsody ' and Radetzky's.' Mairoh ' (Strauss). The thanks of the society are nlso due to Mrs B. A. Bavley, Mrs E. J. LeCren, Miss May." and Mr J. Jago for kindlv sineing at the society's concerts, and f.o Mr J. Wallace for pla.ving a violin solo; to the hon. librarian fMiss B. E. Thompson), our assistant librarian (Mr W. Fielden), Mr J. D. M'Kechnie (hon. treasurer). Mr A. J. Park (hon. auditor), and the press. " During the year a large amount was spent in the DnTnfcage of music and instruments.
