N.Z. FARMERS' UNION.

CLUTHA BRANCH. At a meeting of the Clutha branch of the New Zealand Farmers' Union, Mr A. Houliston presiding, a number of communications from the secretary of the Otago Provincial Council and the Mutual Fire Insurance Association were read. It was resolved to express gratification at the success of the N.Z. Farmers' Union in obtaining a reduction in the fine imposed bv the Railway Department, for overweight wheat sacks. The Chairman repotted that the committee appointed to deal with he matter of "pooling",orders for_ grain sacks and binder twine had, after inquiry, decided to take no action. In .discussing! re- r mits to be. sent to the Provincial Conference, 'the'rabbit question in general and the question of rabbit-proof fencing _ in particular gave rise to a long discussion. It was eventually moved by Mr John. Christie, seconded by Mr R. H. Wilson, and carried—" That the Rabbit Act has/become useless and obsolete in this district, and the branch suggests that the Government either import or manufacture rabbit netting? to supply to farmers at lowest price, and that the Fencing Act be so amended, as tc provide that where a road divides two farms, that ir the case of one farmer deciding to wire-net his property the other should be compelled to bear his share of the cost, the same as .if it were a boundary fence, excepting, of course, where both decided tc wire-net their side of the road." One member ventured the opinion that there were either too few or too many inspectors at present; that there should' be either a more rigid enforcement of the act, or that wire netting should be generally adopted.
