FIRES.
AUCKLAND, March IS. A fire in Prospect terrace, Mount Eden, destroyed a house owned by Mr H. Paltridge, of Napier. Mr Arthur Hodgson nad moved in a few hours previous to the outbreak, and during his absence the fire occurred. The cause is a mystery. PAHIATUA, March 20. Shortly before 9 o'clock last night a fire broke out in the new District High School buildings, which were completed and opened by the Minister of Education only a few months ago. The whole of the main building was completely destroyed as well as a detached building used as a secondary school. .Another detached building, which was used as an infant school, was saved. The origin of the fire is a mystery. The loss is esti-. mated at £I3OO. HASTINGS, March 17. A 13-roonied 'house, owned and occupied by Mrs E.' Bamforth, was totally destroyed by fire yesterday afternoon. The cause is unknown. " Mrs Bamforth was absent in Wellington, and the remainder of the family were away at the time of the outbreak. A quantity of furniturw was saved. The insurance on the building was £250 in the National, and the furniture was insured for . £2OO in ttw Alliance office. NAPIER, March 18. A nine-roomed dwelling at Papakura, owned and occupied by Mr Henry Harvey, was totally destroyed by fire yesterday afternoon as a result of a drum of tar igniting. The house was insured for £4OO in the National Office. The furniture was uncovered. WELLINGTON, March 18A fire this morning destroyed the up-* holstery works of Ivan and Thompson. The contents,, consisting of fibre, clothes, kapok, etc., were not insured. The building, owned by Mr John Myers, was insured for £9OO with the Commercial Union.
