Giving evidence before the Divorce Commission, Sir John C. Bigham, president of the Divorce Division, strongly opposed legal separations, and aroused considerable criticism by stating that a man's misconduct was oT less significance than a woman's.

Mr Justice Bargrave Deane declared that separation orders are a living death, and wrong altogether. They lead, he said, to immorality. Mr Justice Bargrave Deane and Sir George Lewis favoured absolute equality of the sexes in divorce matters.
