CHILDREN'S COMPETITIONS

I have received the appended note from, the secretary of the A. and P'. Society, in response to an inquiry about one of the classes, and am publishing it in the page for the benefit of country readers who may wish to enter. I shall publish it again in a few weeks' time, so that those who miss it this time may have another chance of seeing it. "For the coining winter show which is held under the auspices of the Otago A. and P. Society, and which opens in Dunedin on May 31, the following classes are provided as school competitions for boys and girls. One class is- for the best collection of vegetables grown in the school grounds by scholars under the supervision of the schoolmaster, entries for which must be made in the name of the school where grown. The society provides tables 6ft by 4ft to display the collection, and awards a first prize of £2 and a second prize of £1 to the two best displays. There is another class for the best collection of produce exhibited by children from- any one school, the prizes for this also being £2 first, and £1 second. The entry for these two classes is free. With reference to the school children's essay competition, several alterations have been made in the conditions with a view to inducing more children attending schools to compete, and four prizes will this year be given for each class. The first class is for the best description of exhibits displayed at the winter show, written, by a. boy or girl between the ages of 13 and 16 years, and the second class is for boys and girls under 13 years of age. The prizes for the above classes are —First £l, second 10s, third ss, fourth 2s 6d. The following points have been decided upon in connection with the competition: "(a) Best general description of show, 35 points. "(b) Neatness and style of essay. 15 points. "(c) The most attractive exhibit in the show. 10 ncints. - <

"Admission tickets, available for four days, will be granted to each competitor on the payment of Is, and this amount will also cover the cost of entry fee. The essay must not exceed €OO words, and must be written on foolscap on one side of the paper only, and the essay must be wholly orervared and written by the competitors in school. Printed entry f extras will be obtainable .from the secretary of the society ■ Crawford street, Dunisdin, and must be signed by the competitor only. The entries for this competition must be made on or before Saturday. 2£th May. 1910. the essays to be handed into the secretary one week after the winter show, on a date to be decided on."
