SHACKLETON'S BOOK.

TEN-GUINEA EDITION. (Feom Our Own Correspondent.) WELLINGTON, March 2. ,1 have just seen a copy of the 10guinea edition de luxe of Sir E. Shackleton's book regarding the recent British Antarctic expedition (1907-1909). The new matter in this edition is contained in a third thin volume entitled "The Antarctic Book," of which 300 copies were issued. The volume contains the signatures of the 16 members of the shore party and special contributions written and drawn by members of the expedition during the Antarctic winter. The sketches consist of portraits of members of the southern party, Mount Erebus in eruption, the crater of Mount Erebus, southward bound, Ernest Joyce, giant toadstools, and the explosion of a toadstool.; The new letterpress consists of Sir E. Shackleton's poem on Erebus, and a long a.nd somewhat laboured article by D. Mawson entitled " Bathybia, or What Might Have Been at the South Pole." The pages cut out of the book .and reinserted, though very neatly done, are easily discoverable. They are pages 21 to 26, inclusive. They now contain Six E. Shackleton's poem on Erebus, a fantastic illustration of the crater of Erebus, and a rough little drawing of two penguins. There is, of course, no indication of what was previously printed on these nages. If the space was formerly occupied by the poem the leaves were probably out out of the book because oi some misprint or mistake in the verses. Copies of the_ non-mutilated book will possess a certain value to collectors.
