ARNST v. BARRY. LONDON, March 4. The Sportsman understands that Ernest Barry is willing to arrange a return match mth Dick Arnet on the Thames whatever the result of the match on the Zambesi River (in August) may be. ARNST v. PEARCE:A FIXTURE ABANDONED. SYDNEY, March 6. Arnst has cabled that his proposed race with Pearce is off. A COLONIAL OARSMAN. LONDON, March 6. M. B. Higgins, of Melbourne, rows bow in the Oxford boat in the inter-university race. OTAGO AMATEUR. SWDJ9JIIVG CLUB. ANNUAL CARNIVAL. The fact that on Saturday afternoon there was a big cricket match in progress probably robbed the Otago Amateur Swimming Club of some patrons, but there was nevertheless a fairly numerous attendance at the St. Clair Bathe, when the club held its annual swimming carnival. Among the spectators who watohed the aquatic display with much interest wore a great many ladies. The weather was fine, but a chilly wind from the north-east did not make matters too pleasant; particularly for competitors. The events were started with commendable despatch, though a little unavoidable delay occurred over the Water Polo Match between teams of six from Northey's Physical Culture School and the Otago Amateur Swimming Club. This was really an exhibition rather than a competition, and the game wa6 played with great spirit by both sides. Very few of the 12 men engaged escaped sudden and violent disappearances under water, due to the energy of their opponents, and such and other little diverting circumstances served to keep the spectators in a continual state'of merriment. The Greasy Pole Competition was another cause for amusement. The Ladies' Race was among the most interesting of the events, but was confined to very youthful representatives of the fair sex. It was keenly contested, and at its conclusion the young ladies taking part seemed quite disinclined to quit the water to allow the programme to be proceeded with. Following are tie results: — ■
