Subsequently, owing to. a certain rumour, Dr Bennett 'Clarke Hyde sued the executor at Independence, Missouri, for slanderously accusing him of poisoning Colonel Swope, and also ■ Colonel Swope's nephew, who likewise died suddenly. The case took a sensational turn, when, it was announced that a chemical analysis showed that- Colonel Swope had died from strychnine. In filing his case Dr Hyde furtherstated that the defendant accused him of inoculating members of the Swope family with germs of typhoid, which several had contracted. Dr Hyde, who married Colonel Swope's niece, attended the colonel and other members of his family.
