POLAR EXPLORATION

GERMAN ANTARCTIC EXPEDITION

LONDON, March 6.

First-lieutenant Filchner, of the German General Staff and the explorer of Tibet, Pamir, and Turkestan, will lead the-German Antarctic expedition. He hopes to start in October this year for his base at Wedel Sea. He proposes to cross the continent on reaching the Pole, instead of turning back on his tracks. He follows Shackleton's route to Ross Sea,, meeting midway the provision depot to be established by a subsidiary expedition from Ross Sea. If two ships participate in the expedition the cost will be £IOO,OOO, if one £60,000. A high personage has anonymously contributed £15,000, and, others £3OOO each.

Lieutenant Filchner explained his plans at a meeting of the Geographical Society at Berlin.

Professor Nordenskjold, who was present, expressed his approval of the proposed expedition.
