Stevenson and Grant, tailors, charged with employing girls on the statutory half-holiday, pleaded that the cutter, who was responsible for the breach, was not aware of the btatute. They were fined 20s and costs. W. Mowbray, pastrycook, charged with failing to pay the award rate to an apprentice. Defendant's counsel admitted « the breach, but pleaded that Mowbray had been paying wages according to the previous scale, not knowing that it was a wrong one. The magistrate took this into consideration, aad inflicted a nominal penalty of 10 per cent., the defendant undertaking to nay up arrears.
