BOROUGH COUNCILS AND CONTRACTORS.
NAPIER, January 19. The Audit Office has certified to tho correctness of the Napier Borough Council's balance sheet, with the exception that payments for supplies had been made to Mr J. P. Thomson, a member of the council, for an amount which exceeded the maximum prescribed by sub-section (1) of section 42 of the Municipal Corporations Act. At the council meeting to-night, a letter was read from Mr Thomson tendering his resignation. This was accepted with regret. The Mayor pointed out that companies of which councillors • were members could legally supply goods to the council, while councillors carrying on private businesses could not do so. Tn his opinion, if any councillor was debarred from supplying goods to the council, all should be placed on tho same footing.
