The weather was perfect for bowl? ing and the greens were running vetj sweetly. An early start was made with' the singles, and green winners were found on all the greens played upon. Several ol the doubles were played off on the Dun*, edin Green at the end of the day. A new system has been introdiieed connection with the Binaries Championship* At the commencement the players on eacls green are divided into two sections — and B. The allotment of competitors iit the second round depends upon the results in the first round, winners playing winnorfc and losers ploying losers. The result Us that at the end of the second round thers are four players with two wins each, e:p;li{J wifch one win and a loss, and four witkj two losses, the last-mentioned dropping ouf of the contest. In the third round thcs«[ who secured wins in the first two rounds get byes, while four of those with win and one loss play against the otheS four with a similar record, the result, being four with two wins and a loss and fouf with one win and two losses. Those with; two losses do not take any further pai'lS in the play. After this the contest pro« eeedis on the sudden death principle. Those who got byes in the th'Vd section in see?tion A meet four players who wertf similarly r>laeed in section B. and th<| nlavers with two wins and a, loss in sec* tion A meet, similar players from section Bk On this principle a winner on each gro/vrf is fowid. and these players have to £ghf out the finals. The following are the results of yesterv day's play, and also a. portion of the game** played: CHAMPIONSHIP SINGLES. First prize, trophy to the value of £4 an3>. framed certificate; ceeond prize, trophjj to the value of £3 and framed o&rtiflcaibft {' fourth prize, trophy to the v;!.luc of £l< third prist©, trophy to the value of ;£&<-.

Anticipations that the. bowling tournament would be concluded on Friday we.re not realised, notwithstanding the fact that play was continuous right up to 8.15 in the evening, when the failing light put a stop to the games. The Dunedin Green. to which play was confined, was thronged with spectators, and the liveliest interest was taken in all the contests, particularly as the finals approached. Rain fell steadily for over an hour in the morning when play was commenced, but th«e weather then cleared until about 6 o'clock in the evening when a misty rfain began to fall. That there have been a good many bowls used in the tournament that would not pass the test can hardly be questioned, but the bowler is apt to be generous or disinclined to challenge an opponent's bowls, and all escaped criticism until Friday, when the Dunedin rink skipped bv Gillies protested against the bowls used by the Fairfield team. It was intimated to the Fairfield men during the progress of the game, and at a stage when the scores were level, that exception would be taken to their bowls, and a protest was written land lodged before the actual final result of tho game was known. The eight bowls were put down the shoot by the official bowl-tester and four failed to stand the test. The rink was oonee'quently disqualified, and the came went to ths Dunedin team, despite their urgent request that Fairfield be allowed to proceed with tested bowls. As tho Executive would not agree to this the Dunedin team dccuned to take any advantage of a protest lodged in the interests of the game, and withdrew altosrether from the contest'. Following are the results of tho day's play: CHAMPIONSHIP RINK TOURNAMENTS. GREEN WINNERS. Fir-st Round: Fairfield (H. M'Lauchlan, J. Anderson,
