LONDON, January 17. Speaking at Stratford, Mr Walter Long declared that Lord Lansdowne's letter on old-age pensions meant that Unionists regarded these pensions as part of a settled policy, and they intended to introduce a contributory system which would provide for the disabled, and also for persons at an earlier age than 70. LONDON, January 19. \ : Prior to Mr Lloyd-George's meeting at Newtown, 1388 old-age pensioners, who live in Montgomeryshire, mounted the platform and expressed their gratitude for the benefits he had conferred on them. MR CROOKSS RETURN. LONDON. January 17. Mr Will Crooks had a great ovation at Woolwich on his return. He declared that he brought from Canada and Australasia messages of hope to the -world regarding the solidarity of Labour. PREFERENTIAL TARIFF. LONDON, January 17. Speaking at Woolwich, Mr Crooks declared that the people of New South Wales complained bitterly of the 5 percent. Preferential Tariff, under which the price of commodities had been raised by 15 per cent. Ke added that all colonials repudiated with scorn and derision any suggestion to give them preference in British markets. A POPULAR MINISTER. LONDON, January 17. When the Rev. Sylvester Home entered the pulpit at White-field's Tabernacle on Sunday, after his election for Ipswich, the congregation rose and cheered him, waving their hats and handkerchiefs. GOVERNMENT MA JORJTY. LONDON, January 18. The Daily Chronicle (L.) says that up to the present it looks like an ultimate Government majority, exceeding that of Mr Gladstone's in 1885. The Unionist newspapers recognise that a tremendous effort is still required to bring down the Government majority to anything like vanishing point. The. Daily Mail says that no danger could be greater than that of the Nationalists holding the balance of power. " Now is the time for all moderate men and wise Liberals to rally to the country. The naval ports (referring to Portsmouth and Devonport) have given them the lead. The largeness of the polls throughout the country is due in some degree to the mildness of the weather. The Right Hon. J. A. Pease ((L.), who stands for Saffron Walden, has pledged himself to vote against Home Rule with arc:lndependent Executive. ~ ~ . INCENSED MINERS. LONDON, January 18. Ten thousand Durham miners, who are I dissatisfied with their agent's agreement ! with the coal-owners respecting the Eight Hours' Act, demonstrated against Mr : Johnston, the Labour candidate, .at Gateshead, and asf* v.: in passing a colliery,

where they did much damage. Tomorrow I they will march against the Labour candi- j date for Bishop Auckland. I January 19. Mr Asquith, speaking at Lev-en, said that the lesson of the polls wi'S that in the new Parliament tariff reform was a political impossibility. In writing to several candidates Mr Churchill urged the electorates to return a strong and independent Government. In the course of a speech Mr LloydGeorge declared it must be made perfectly clear that if the Lords rejected a bill after it bad been sent up ? second time it would be sent straight through to the Throne. j The Tariff Reform Lsa'gue has chartered a number of motor buses, and is perambulating the country districts with specimens of dumped goods. The Unionist paper.-? contain cablegrams showing the anxiety of Berlin and Hamburg merchants respecting tariff reform, which is expected to change the conditions of German trade. Others rejoice at the prospect of Freetrade remaining undisturbed. One paper expresses delight over Mr Chiozza Money's defeat, adding . that his references to black bread and sausages are the laughing stock of Germany. Mr Halctane (Secretary for War), though recovering, is still too poorly to engage in election work. Six hundred telegrams of congratulation have been sent- to Lord C. Beresford. HOME RULE. LONDON, January 17. An orderly Unionist demonstration .of one hundred thousand people was held in Liverpool to protest against the granting of Home Rule to Ireland. January 19. In the course of a speech, Mr Pease (Chief Liberal Whip} said that Mr Asquith, in his Albert Hall speech, gave no I pledge that Home Rule would be given to Ireland. What he said was that the ban which the Liberals had imposed uport' themselves at the last general election had been removed, and that the Liberals were now free, if they so desired, to extend self-government to Ireland. At the same time everyone in the Government^was pledged not to give an Irish Independent Parliament, but self-government consistent with the Union. January 23. Speaking at Dublin. Mr J. E. Redmond expressed his confidence in Mr Asquith's fulfilment of his pledge. "The Nationalists will not ask for Home Rule before the veto is settled, but when the veto is gone the first friendly House of Commons elected will carry Home Rule. Irishmen do not ask for separation." NO LEGISLATION PROMISED. LONDON, January 20. Mr Asquith, in a speech at Fife, declined to promise legislation of any kind till the Government had settled its conclusions with the Lords. That permanent obstacle must be removed, and till it was done there wa,s no use in talking about legislation. The Liberal party was free to support any measures giving Ireland self-government in purely Irish affairs, subject to the unimpaired supremacy of the Imperial Parliament. He was unprepared to give a pledge respecting the House of Lords' judgment regarding the payment of labour members, but he would consider the subject. Speaking at Largoward, and in reply to questions, Mr Asquith said he proposed to pa« 3 a bill through Parliament to limit the Lordu' veto to the lifetime of a single Parliament. Be was in favour of manhood suffrage, subject to reasonable restrictions. In reply to a fuither question, he said he had always been an opponent of woman's suffrage, as, in his opinion, it was neither good for women nor for the State. MISCELLANEOUS. LONDON, January 20. During the .elections many Nonconform. ist preachers urged their congregations to vote for the Liberals. The vicar of St. John's (Plumstead) announces a thanksgiving service to commemorate the timely deliverance of Woolwich from the hands of a Socialist and Sabbath-breaker. January 21. The proposed thanksgiving service at Plumstead has been abandoned owing to the Bishop's disapproval. Lord C. Beresford has received 3000 cablegrams of congratulations from various parts of the Empire. The Canadian newspapers describe Mr Joseph Martin, who has been elected for East St. Pancras in the Liberal interest, as "the stormy petrel " of Canadian polw tics. Mr Asquith, in a speech at Ceres, 'da* precate& importing electoral controversies regarding the supposed opinions of the* colonies, whose far-sighted statesmen would be the first to deprecate that any, Gorfc of pressure should appear to be exercised by them on the free judgment of the Motherland's people. The Fremdenblatt says that the historical significance of the elections is that the commercial policy of Europe and America must in 1910 begin to prepare for England's transition to Protection. .Fifty-four persons have been arrested in Belfast, mostly for attempting to personate | Independent Nationalists. \ Speaking at Ladvbank, Mr Asauith. said

he would say nothing regarding the general results of the election fill the situation was more developed; but he would say that, except at Birmingham and its sphere of influence, Liverpool, and on© or two other isolated areas, the whole of the great centres of industry in England and Scotland had given an emphatic verdict in favour of Freetrade. Eeplying to hecklers, the Prime Minister declared that he did not favour the nationalisation of railways. He thought the present distribution of members unjust, and that the time had come for an amendment. There was tumultous enthusiasm on the Stock Exchange at the successive announcements of Unionist victories. An elector at Auchtermuchty asked Mr 'Asquith whether he would say what he was prepared to do in the event of the Lords rejecting the bill to limit the veto. Mr Asquith replied : "No ! I will not. We will wait and see." January 22. Radical newspapers complain that the nse of motor cars largely explains the result of country polling. ALLEGED TERRORISM. LONDON, January 22. The Daily News states that owing to the terrorism which has prevailed since the introduction of the Budget the great majority of large country estates officers have been employing intimidation to their tenants. The temporal arm has been reinforced by the spiritual, one vicar who was the channel of most material bounties working against the Liberals. The Daily News advises voters to profees Toryism but vote Liberal. The martyrs on the rack told verbal untruths rather than betray their cause. A QUALIFYING STATEMENT. LONDON, January 23. In the course of an address to the electors at East Fife, Mr Asquith, explaining the Government's social reform projects, twice used the qualifying phrase " if you send us back to Westminster with an adequate majority. - ' Speaking at Torquay, Mr Winston Churchill said that the Government would ..., rim the Budget through or over the House of Lords. HEAVY POLLING. LONDON, January 23. Grantham, and Surrey polled 97 per lent, of the votes on the roll. The newspapers pay tribute to the exemplary composure of the electorates throughout Britain, and, with but few exceptions, to the quiet earnestness of the crowds. GOVERNMENT BORROWINGS. LONDON, January 24. Mr Runciman. speaking at Retford, said that owing to the rejection of the Budget the Government had been obliged to borrow £5,000,000 last week, and £5,000,000 the week before, whiie it was arranging for £3,000,000 more. It was a forced borrower, and therefore was compelled to pay 3g per cent, interest instead of 3£ per cent. SUGGESTION OF ANOTHER ELECTION. LONDON, January 24. Mr Masterman, in a speech at Redhill, said that the Liberals would do nothing until the Lords' veto had been broken. They might require to make another appeal to the country before many months. Sir A. F. Acland Hood, speaking at Taunton, said that the county elections had shown that the House of Lords was absolutely justified in referring the Budget to the people. He was certain that the Unionists would be the only >lid party. PRESS COMMENTS. LONDON, January 19. The Times' Dublin correspondent says that Mr Pease's statements have created jonstemation among the Nationalists. The election is being fought in Ireland on Ihe question of Home Rule. It is now issumed that Mr Asquith, after SaturJay's pollings, expected a, majority independent of the Nationalists' vote, and had . directed his Whip to disown his Albert Eall undertaking. The Times; commenting on Mr Pease's statement, says: "He explains, but only when the borough elections are nearly over, that Mr Asquith really meant nothing in particidar at the Albert Hall. The county elections, wherein the Irish vote is insignificant, are beginning, and the Liberals hope to profit by the repudiation of an intention whereon they have hitherto been trading. The late .Sir W. •Jlarcourt's expression ' a dirty trick,' fittingly describes this manoeuvre. What is now meant is that a Home Rule Bill will only be introduced if it serves party purposes." January 21. The Times says that the fictions in Liber,-:! cp3?cbfs did n>t provoke Mr Aequith to protect against the black bread end ho"scfksh lirs and the false statements ab'ut unemployment in Berlin and New York These ways of drawing in foreign countries were perfectlv right, because Ihev were useful to delude the ignorant into voting for Mr Asfluitft, but there was no report of the fact that our rival* were wnfchiag the prooreps of tariff reform with an apprehension that was qui to shocking.

The Daily Telegraph (0.), writing in reference to the Irish split, says that the O'Rrienites may be a dozen strong in the new House, and it seems clear that they will not hesitate to join the Opposition against the Budget. The Daily Chronicle (G-), says that the decisive issue will be fought in the counties. The alternative is between a majority so attenuated as to make the future uncertain, and a great majority adequate to support, a strong Government in the coming grips with the Lords, and clearing the path for democratic progress. The Times says that if the Unionists continue to work as hitherto they have prospects of being the strongest single party in the new Parliament, and that in the event of there not being a strong Unioniet Opposition, Mr Asquith's hands will be strengthened on such a vital question as national defence, also in the promotion of all legitimate legislation. But should he be weak the Opposition will most rightly restrain him so far as carrying out any revolutionary attacks on the Constitution and the integrity of _ the Empire and private property are concerned. January 24. The Times states that the division of opinion between the north and the south and the unprecedented high polls continue to be the outstanding features of the elections.
