RAILWAY DEPARTMENT.
WESTPORT, January 22. The Railway Department and the coal companies are in conflict over a charge of £3, which the department is making for special trains for the carriage of coa.. The charge has never beeen made prej viouely, the Railway Department being content formerly with the freight on tea | coal, which amounts., inclusive of hauc - ling, weighing, etc., to close on £1 .per 1 truck (2s 6d per ton on 7A tons to tb.3 truck), with a minimum of, say, about 40 trucks to a train. The companies contend that extra trains should be to suit the exigencies of shipping at a bar harbour, and to facilitate the working of mines as regularly as possible, but the Railway Department holds that every special service should be charged for in addition to the freight paid.
