TARANAKI OIL WELLS.
ESCAPING GAS IGNITES. NEW PLYMOUTH. January 14. By some means the gas escaping from No. 2 bore of the Taranaki Petroleum Company was ignited at 1.30 this afternoon, while boring operations at a depth of nearly 3000 ft were' in operation. The ■whole structure was in imminent clanger for some hours, but eventually the fire was suppressed when the plant seemed doomed. Large gangs of men worked strenuously, smothering the bore with clay. The oil-wells were later visited bv the Hon. G. Fowlds. The damage was ultimately found to be very trifling.
