FIRES.
A fire broke out in the Karangahapa road, Newton, on the 17th inst., in a shop occupied by Messrs Dawson Bros, linen merchants. The fire brigade extinguished the outbreak, but not before the shop was gutted. All the stock was destroyed by fire and water. There was no one on the premises at the time of the outbreak, and it is not known whether there were any insurances. A six-roomed residence at Roto-orangi, Cambridge, belonging to the Russo Land Co., Wellington, and its contents were totally destroyed by fire on the 17th. The insurance on the building is £3OO, and on the,,furniture £95. A fire at half-past two on the morning of the 17tn totally destroyed a nine-roomed house in Stephenson street, Blenheim, owned by. Mrs Maoey and occupied by Mr Ge.o. Weldon, who was alone at the time, his wife and children being away. Nothing was saved, Mr Weldon having to escape through a window. Insurances : Building, £4OO in the Standard ; furniture, £l5O in the North British. Mr Weldon estimates his loss at £2OO.
