•FRUITLESS SEARCH. ' CHRISTCHURCH, January 14. I The steamer Ripple arrived at Lyttel- ■ ton this morning from Chatham Islands somewhat ■earlier than she was expected. Captain Allsop reported that the steamer ! left Lyttelton on the eve of Monday, the 3rd inst., and after a fine-weather trip , j reached Waitangi at 5 a.m. on Thursday, ; j the 6th inst. After landing her passen- ■ 1 gers and cargo, the vessel left Waitangi , | at noon the same day and proceeded on | 1 a tour round the various islands of the j group to load wool. In accordance with 1 1 the arrangement made by the Marine | Department with the owners of the i Ripple, Captain Allsop made an exhaustive and thorough search for noseible traces of castaways or wreckage from the missing fishing steamer Due Variable weather was experienced, and the Ripple cruised round all the main islands as well as the outlying islands, reefs, and rocks, including the “ Sisters ” j rrd the “ Forty-fours,” but absolutely I no trace of any castaways or wreckage ! of any kind was found. Captain Allsop i stated that since his previous visit to the ' Chathams two or three packages of timber which the Duoo was carrying for making fish crates had been washed ashore on the west side of the main island.
