A FATAL STEP.
LEAVING A MOVING TRAM CAR. CHRISTCHURCH, January 7. At the inquest on Ellen Butler, the woman who was killed by stepping off a Papanui tram last night, a passenger stated that she saw Mrs Butler step "off the car whilst it was travelling at a good pace. Mrs Butler was looking to the rear of the tram, and she appeared to fall heavily, and skidded along the ground. Apparently deceased thought the car had stopped when she stermed off. The conductor stated that he had no recollection of deceased asking him to stop the car at any particular place. At the time of the accident the car was travelling between 12 and 15 miles an hour. John Ward, traffic superintendent, stated that deceased had travelled beyond the distance she was entitled to travel on the ticket which was found in her bag. Another witness identified deceased as the wife of P. Butler. A verdict was recorded that the woman was accidentally killed whilst getting off a tramcar whilst it was in motion.
