WEST COAST PROSPECTS.
AN OPTIMISTIC VIEW. (From Our Own Correspondent.) GREYjMOUTH, January 8. The Hon. R. M'Kenzie, in referring to the affaire of the district, says that he j was pleased to see that it shows no signs of decay. He had never seen it in such j a prosperous state. The Coast was now ! on a sound foundation, with bright prospects for the future. With three new coal mines working, and the early completion of the Otira tunnel, he looked forward to the time when coal would be carried to Christchurch 5s a ton cheaper j that at present. He was confident that this could be done to the benefit of the district, as it would also increase the railway revenue and at the same time provide cheaper coal in Chriistchurch.
