SPORTING NOTES FROM AUSTRALIA.

By Ravensworth

MELBOURNE, January 2 RACING IN SYDNEY.

Sydney TattersalFs Club meeting was commenced at Randwick last Wednesday in extremely hot weather. The leading event of the day, the Carrington Stakes, six furlongs, attracted 20 runners, including Irishman 10.0, whose chance was greatly esteemed, but he unexpectedly ran a bad race, being third last. The winner was Metograph 8.7, who is by Grafton from Majesty, by Trenton from Bonnie Rosette (dam of Kinglike, Bonnie Chiel, Scottish King, etc.), by Barca.ldine from Bonny Rose, by Rosicrucian —very attractive breeding. Metograph has done most of his racing in Queensland. It was only by a head that Metograph beat Malt Mary, who, with her 101 b penalty for winning the Vil-liea-s Stakes, had 8.7 to carry. Osmo, Brightic, and Zilka were the nearest of the others.

Desert Rose again nad to strike_ her colours, MiaJtsterette, who is in R. O'Connor's stable, beating her in the Juvenile Stakes. The winner carried 7.13 and Desert Rose 9.7. Both are by Maltster, like most of the other leading two-year-olds of the season. Maltsterette's dam, Rosette, is by Gozo from Badge, by Escutcheon from Agatha, by Progress. The Hurdle Race Went to imported Hermes 10.11, bv Gallinale (sire of Pretty Polly). Tabu and Master Fred fell. The firstnamed escaped without injury, but his rider (D. Gallinan) had his collarbone fractured; while Master Fred fell heavily, and was so badly shaken that it is doubtful if he will race again. His rider (E. Burtenshaw) also received a severe shaking, and was taken to St. Vincent's Hospital. Two of the winners—Penniless 8.12 in the Chelmsford Handicap, one mile, and The Acolyte 8.3, in the Dudley Handicap, one mile" and a-quaxter—were sired by Fortunatus (imp.), and each is owned by Mr H. D. O'Brien. The Reckoning 9.12, by Far Niente, with J. Barden up, was successful in the Pace Welter, one mile. The meeting was concluded on Saturday in fin© weather. The leading event was TattersalFs Club Cup, which wajj formerly

a two-mile race but was this year run over a mile and a-half. It ended in a complete surprise, Marlee, who carried a 31b penalty (bringing his weight up to 7.7) for a win in the High-weight Handicap at the A.J.C. meeting winning easily from Lady Wilde 7.11 and King Bee 7.12. There was a large field, and the A.J.C. Summer Cup winner Ungarie, despite that a 141 b penalty brought his weight up to 9.4, was expected to win, and others whose chances were hio-hly regarded were Gidyea 7.4 and Hoax 8.12. All three ran badly. The mile* and a-half was cut out in 2min 3553 C, so it was not a bad ffo. J. A. Mayo has Marlee, who is by True Blue (son of Hotc.hkiss). You can's beat the True Blues for longraces, and they always improve with age. Marlee is now five years old. The second Hurdle Race went to Treat 9.11. by Mero, while Doon Lassie 8.7. with J. Barden in' the saddle, won the Flying Handicao, six furlongs, with a little to spare from Veronite 9.11. The winner is by Ayr Laddie (imp.). The New Year's Gift one mile, proved a good thinjr for Leu'ron 7.ll—lanothtV True BJue,—Btean Vive 7.13 following him home. Styria (Haut Brion—Trieste), with 7.11 up, beat Nanov Stair 7.13 by half a length in the Nursery Handicap, five furlongs and a-half. The victory of Styria. who is trained by J. Siely, was fully anticipated, last event of the day. the Welter Handicap, one mile. enabVd the expensive New Zeaiander Golden Slipper to win her second race in Australia. She was well handicapped at 9.8 (7.7 minimum), and won oojsilv from Forte 8.6 and Safrano 8.3. >o far 'GoHn-T Slipner hr.a made very little return for tho 4500 gs that Mr W. E. White naid for her.

White Spots fell at the last hurdle at the Bmrumbeet meeting on New Year's Day, and broke his neck. Mr Fred. Woodhouse, sen., died last, Wednesday in Melbourne at the advanced age of 88 years. Mr Woodhouse was the painter of many notable racehorses. After Malt Mary had won the Flying Handicap at the A.J.C. summer meeting the jockey F. Connelly complained to the stewards that the owner of the Maltster filly had engaged him to ride her in the event named, and subsequently broke the engagement. After investigating, the complaint the stewards ordered the owner of Malt Mary to pay Connelly a similar percentage to that which the winning jockey was entitled to. The death is announced from New South Wales of Trentmooji JTrentmoor —Moon-

beam), who won the Sydney Tattersall's Cup last year. Boldrewood died at Flemington on Friday last from the effects of gastric influenza, lie was a four-year-old colt, by Amherst from Brio (dam of Bramshaw), by Warpaint from Alia (dam of Velo-ce, .Bacchus, and Silenus), by King Arthur .'.iorii Melody, by Troubadour, and was bred and owned by Mr E. B. Bell. Boldrewood won the Valley Handicap at the Aioonce Valley meeting on December 1, and this was his last race. Ho was not quite himself when he ran, and was taken bad on returning to his stable. A few m ™ th / »8? Mr Bell refused an offer of £4OO tor Boldrewood. There were a few important race meetings in the country in Victoria, on New dear's Day. The Terang Cup was won by Matouree 7.10, by Playbill (imp.); the Hanging Rock Cup by Wirregah 8.11, by St. Swithin; and the BurrUmboet Cup by Macphersoh, by Wallace. The New South Wales country jockey, T. Coil, had a good innings at the Hoskingtown race meeting on Boxing Day, when lie piloted the winners of the five races on the card.

At the annual Delegate (N.S.W.) picnic races last, week a bad accident occurred at the conclusion of the day. In the final race Fiery Demon was the onlly horse left in, and stirfcel on the journey by himself. P Joseph rode Little Wonder across to join in and race Fiery Demon home the last couple of furlongs; but, as he turned to join in, the horses collided. Both horses went down, and both riders were unseated. Whitaker (aboriginal), rider of Fiery Demon, was lendered unconscious and was about half an hour being brought round. P Joseph fared much worse. He was taken to the hospital in an unconscious state, and it was found that his collarbone and jawbone were broken, and he received other injuries He regained con sciousness next day, and is making fan progress towards recovery. Joseph's horse Little Wonder, wai killed instantly, buo Fiery Demon escaped unhurt The interstate cricket matches have not excited as much interest as usual this season. With the assistance of Crawford, the English bowler. South Australia beat New South Wales by an innings and 4 runs. In turn, New South Wales last week defeated Victoria by 272 runs. On New Year's Day Victoria ana South Australia commenced a match, which at the time of writing looks like being easilv won by South Australia, for whom Clem Hill in the first innings scored 185 and Crawford 75.

Mr J. Wren, who controls the Richmond, Ascot, and Fitzroy courses, announced at the Richmond races on Monday that he would allow each jockey in the habit of riding at these courses £1 per "week during the four weeks during which there would bo no races held. As this will absorb over £ls0 r Mr Wren's kindness is much appreciated by the participants.

Two New Zealand-bred horses, Waihuku 10.1 and Leeskle 11.5, ran in the Hurdle Race, but both shaped badly. Leeside, who is by Euroclydon, was toiling in the rear to the last hurdle, where he got rid of his. rider. The race proved a good thing for Wdllara 11.7, who had run second to The Winnover at Caulnekl. The Steeplechase was taken by Boomerang 10.10, who had also run second at Caulfield. His conqueror on that occasion, Findowrie, fell here and broke his neck, and Consulate met with a similar fate at the same jump—the second. Chittagong 8.5, by Holbrook, accounted for the Criterion Handicap, for two-year-olds, while Port Logan 8.9, by Wallace, just scrambled home from The Pest 8.13 in the Welter Handicap. RACING IN WEST AUSTRALIA. The summer meeting of the Western Australian Turf Club was continued! at Perth last Wednesday, when the.chief event of the meeting, the Perth Cup, of 2000sovs, two miles, was decided. It has in recent years been a lucky race for Mr P. A. Connolly, but his sequence of successes came to an end, when his representative, Jolly Begga.r 7.9. suffered a half-head defeat. Mr Connolly's colours were carried to victory in 1904 by Blue Spec (who subsequently won the MelbounaT Cup), in 1905 by Czarovitch (in whom Mr E. W. Hocking had an interest), in I£€6 by May Kng, in 1907 by Post Town, and last year by Scorcher. Looh Shiel 7.8, who stopped the Connolly sequence, was not liked by the racing public. He is a five-year-old horse by Le Var (6on of Lochicl) from Nitre (who won the V.R.C. Oaks in 1899 for Mr James Wilson, sen), by Off Colour from Mitrailleuse, by Musket. Mr S. P. Mackay, who won the Newmarket Handicap with Soultl.ine, bred Loch Shiel, and took the Hannan's Handicap at the last Kalgoorlie meeting with him. At present Loch Shiel is held on lease by Mr W. Carey. Le Va.r, sire of Loch Shiel, won the Perth Cup in IS9B. The much-travelled Willy Wally 8.7 was third, and Flora Mac 6.11 fourth; while the top-weight, Annapolis 9.11, ran disappointingly. Messrs P. A. Connolly and E. W. Hocking took the Maiden Plate with Corzil, who is by Orzil from Grafin, by Grafton. The Hurdle Race went to Mezzo 10.8, by Amherst, who survived a protest entered by the owner of Vareena 10.12, for crossing. The stipendiary stewards, however, opened an inquiry into the alleged inconsistent running of Mezzo, who finished out of a place in the Hurdle Race on Monday, and next day they decided to disqualify the trainer, D. M'Donald, rider P. Bracegirle, and Mezzo, for 12 months. Ths Epsom Handicap, six furlongs, Was captured by Sims-He (by Simmer), who, notwithstanding the steadier of 9.10, ran the six furlongs in, Imin 14- 2-ssec. Good time was also recorded in. the Sapling Stakest,

five furlongs, which was Km by Veracious (Holbrook—Vera) in lmin 2 4~ssec. The Midland Handicap, one mile, went to Saladin 7.2, by Senisohal. The meeting was advanced another step on Saturday, when the leading event wag the Railway Stakes, of BCOsovs, one ..nile and a-quarter. Jolly Beggar 8.0 .vas expected to win, but did not even .succeed! in (getting a place. The winner was Thigen Tim, 7-2, who is. a threc-quartei-brother to Little Mary, being by the Melbourne Cup winner Gaulius from Mora Pork, by Moorthorpe from Johanna, by Maribyrnong. Another of Mr Connolly's good thing's, in Ayr Boy 8.10 for the two-year-old event, was easily beaten by Renegade 7.2, by True Blue, but he won the Welter Mile with Coral 7.12. The weight-for-age event, run over seven furlongs, rvaa landed by Annapolis, but he does not appear to have had much to spare *roa» Mazarin. Quicksilver 9.2, by Broken Hill, took the Jumpers' Flat Bace, and Lady Musket the Welter Handicap. The meeting was concluded on Monday, when Annapolis vvat again' to the fore, the little New Zealan.de r .carrying 9.11, and easily winning the Imperial Stakes, a mile and a-half handicap. The field _ was a. good one—for the West,—and Nucifera, a. cast-off of T. Payten'e, was second. The ancient Tasmanian, Hatteras, by Chesterman, was 'in great form, as he carried 10.5 to victorj m the Fremantle Plate, six furlongs, and subsequently won, the January Handicap, seven furlongs, with 10.6 up. Ho won easily on each occasion, and put up good times. Vareena, by Lo Var, was successful in the Hurdle Race, in which Wainui fell, the rider Price sustaining concussion of the brain. The Commonwealth Handicap, six furlongs, was won by Veracious 8.6, and the Final Handicap, one mile and a furlong, by Lady Musket 7.10.
