THE USE OF NETS
CHRISTCHURCH. January 7. Three cas.es under the Fisheries' Conservation Act were heard at the Magistrate's Couri. the offences having been detected at New Brighton on December 12. Two young men were fined for having taken a sole less than nine inches in length, and they and four other men were fined for having dragged a net containing fish on to dry hind. The latter is an offence under section 11 of the act. which provides a maximum penalty of" £2O for each offence. One of the fishermen stated that there was no clause to this effect in the regulations provided by the Customs Office, but the magistrate assured him that the act was "definite on the point, and ignorance of the law was no excuse. They must take all fish out of the net before taking- it out of the water.
