Otago A. & P. Society's Annual Horse Parade at Tahuna Park.
TWO PRIZE-WINNER*, AT THE CANTERBURY A. AND P. ASSOCIATIONS ANNUAL. HORSE PARADE AT ADDiXGTON SHOW GROUNDS.
THE NEEDS OF THE MAORI CLERGY. .Stipends an<l vicarages are the giv-at iK'iV.h of the Maori clergy, according to statements made at the la9t meeting of the Waiopu Diccesan Synod, in Napier. It was stated that tho Maori clergymen weTe handicapped by having to spend much time in ultivatmg tho a* lands -to provide themvf!\^s witli f<ol. The Young Maori party felt that no piogress was being made in church life. One speaker said that a Maori *>pent £300 at a wedding breakfast in his district, while his vicar had no house. It was not ko much that fche Maoris were illiberal, but many had the same fault of illiberal ity as existed amongst tthe Europeans. Another member said that he had received £1604 during the year towards
th 3 Nati\e Pastoiate Fund*, but not a farthing from the Maoris themselves. From the general discussion that crsuvd later, it seem*, that the vicaivfe trouble was more apparent than real. 'Ihs trouble in many districts is the d^-igrceiTKnt as to the location of the site. And it has happened in more than one instance that the vicaxage providvxl is net used by the pastor, who shows more liking for a tent or a whare.
