TEACHERS' RAILWAY CONCESSIONS.
THE MINISTER FIRM.
AUCKLAND, October 1.
A deputation, consisting of Mr J. H. M'Kenzie (acting chairman) and Mr R. Crowe (secretary of the Auckland Education Beard), vfaited upon the Minister of Education (the Hon. Gr. Fowlds) this morning. It was pointed out to the Minister that for many years teachers had been allowed concessions in the nature of free railway paeses to enable them to attend training- classes. Intimation had now been received that these passes were no longer to be issued. The deputation asked that the Minister should reconsider the matter.
Mr Fowlds replied that the passes were to have ceased issue in September, but it had been decided to allow them to go on up to the end of the year. After that, however, they would not be renewed. If the Education Board could show him how to effectively ,sa,ve £50,000 per year in expenditure in the Education Department it might be possible to do something in the matter. On special occasions pas£«3 would be issued for tl*e nee of country teaohers attending summer or ■winter classes, but otherwise th«y worjld not be issued after ihe end of tbe year, as the results of tbe system^ bad nofc been satisfactory, and there rawon to believe there had been considerable abuse in their use.
