INVERCARGILL D.L.F. LITERARY AND DEBATING CLUB.

I Motto " Excelsior." ' The usual weekly meeting of the above club was beld in +h« South British Chambers, Esk street. We were fortunate in again securing the clubroom. but we were minus a table. However, we soon got over the ! difficulty by rigging up a form to act as a j table. Shpsia presided, and there was a j fair nftendo, nce of members present. The I B'ibj-cct for the evening was a debate: "Which Ha° flic fJr^ptm- T"fluenf« on Character — Society or Solitude?" In the absence of Midpie Shasta led foi Solitude, supported by I/? la and The Helmsman. Octava led for Society, supported by Luoeda. Lavengro, and Marnys. The debate proved very inteipsting; some splendid paper« were read, and the arguments for each side were well brought out. The Helm«man read «in excellent paper: it was hi<? first at+empt at a debate, and wp hope i< will be by no means his last. We were p7l very nleased to receive a paper from Lola. She has been both absent and ?ilent for a long while, but it is evident that she has not forgotten the club yet. Her paper wps an excellent one. «nd we trn«.t thai T^n'a will send it to Dot to be printe'l in full. Some open mpeiin? pawrs were then read. A paner on " Babylon," by Lucedn, proved ve?y interesting. "An Important Question," "n imaffw'irv iiiepfinp- «f thp rhib. by Haweaite. nroved very amusing. This paper, fomine from a member who has never attended n club meeting. Ferve^ to show tha+ Haweaite hes followed the doings of the dub very c!o<=elv " Tii ihci Bush was the title of a very nice little paper from the pen of Long-wood Blossom. Longwood Blossom lives in the b-" lr -bir«'"ir«i. Phe inf'^-tunatplv canrot run about like other children, but it is evident from her paper tbnt she taken a V^n interest in all around her. " The S f artin;» of Life " was ?. ee'ecKon Fent in by Marnvs. and " The Farmer's Bu?v Day " wa; the Ht'.e of Aori^rc's tjauer. Acrere is one of the club's staunchest country supporters; there is rar^lv a meeting without a paper from her, and f.or fo young a m«mber her pacers are de-erving of great credit.
