LAKE COUNTY.

August 7. — For the pa 6+ week the "Weather has been, changeable. Yesterday morning there was a slight coating of snow on the low-lying country, but it soon disappeared. There is, however, a lot of snow on the mountain tops. Frost has again eet in. Winter Week-cXid. — Between 40 and 50 persons topk—advancage of the last of th© winter excursions on Saturday - last. On Sunday and Monday the weather "was splendid. The excursion to Head of Lake on Monday was well patronised. Football. — The Cup match between Queenetown and Arrow, played on the former's ground on /Wednesday last, res«ulted in a win for Arrow by 6 points to 3. Arrow is now leading with 4 points to Queenstown's 2. The next match will be played at Arrowtown on Wednesday next. Entertainment. — The annual entertainment in connection with the Queenstown ■Dominican Convent School took place in the Town Hall, Queenstown, on Tuesday evening last. Despite the fact that the night was wet the attendance was large, aU parts of the district being represented. The first part of- the entertainment consisted of vocal and .instrumental items, dialogues, etc., and the second part of the •three-act comedy entitled, " Woman's ißighte," by the pupils. In the latter and _in their items in the first part, the -hil"drep gave evidence of the careful and able training they had received from their teachers. The door prize in connection with" the entertainment war won by an Invercargill visitor. Social. — A social and dance in connection with the Walcatipu Mounted Rifles •was held in the Garrison Hall, Arrowtown, last evening. Although the night was wet the attendance was large, about 50 couples being present. The music for the dance, which was first class, was supplied by Mrs Mayne (piano) and Messrs S. and W. Stevenson (violins). As M.C. Mr S. M'Skimming wat the right man in the right place. Refreshments on a liberal scale -were provided by the ladies. During the evening Captain dimming returned thanks to -he public for theii patronage, and the ladies for supplying refreshments. Ministerial Visit. — The Hon. R. M'Kenzie, Minister of Mines and Public fWorks, arrived in Arrowtown this evening. After luncheon tke Minister, who was accompanied by our member, Mr W. 3?raser, M.P., was entertained in he Athenseum Hall. Mr H. M'Kibbin (Mayor) presided, and on behalf of the residents -welcomed Mr M'Kenzie to the town. Addresses were given by the Rev. J. F. <yDonnell, Mr G. H. Romans (president Miners' Association), Mr G. D. Baird (chairman Wakatipu Prospecting Syndicate), Mr W. "Reid (chairman Lake County Council), Mr W. Fraser, M.P., and the Hon. R. M'Kenzie. As a representative of ■die Witness accompanied the Minister, a full Teport of the proceedings will bs found in anothei column. Songs were given by Misses M. Jopp and A. Cotter, and Eev. H. Packe, and a duet by the Misses Toungman. Mrs P. de la Perrelle acted as accompanist to the singers. The Ministerial party arrive in Queenstown tomorrow (Sunday). The Airship. — In common with other parts of the Dominion, the usual question during the past week has been: "Have you seen the airship? " " Your Own " has mot yet seen it, but several residents of the 'district aver they have. Two well-known residents of Gibbston are prepared to make an affidavit that they saw the mysterious visitor — one seeing it on Friday, 30th ult., and the other eeeinjr it yesterday. As both are reliable men, and not given to imagination, people here are beginning to think there must be something in the story. Mining. — Mr L. O. Beal, managing engineer for" the United Goldfield Company, is at present at Macctown. Mr Beal hopes to have work in the various mines there in full swing in a short time. The company has purchaficd the O.P.Q battery at Waipori, and the work of dismantling it and having it removed to Macetown is to be put in hand at once.
