FANCIERS' COLUMN.

The Otago Witn93s has been appointed the official organ for the publication of annonniement* of the Dnna-lin Fanciers' Club.

DATES OF SOUTH" ISLAND SHOWS June 23, 24— Southland. June, 25, 26- : -Timaru. June 2€— Taieril July %' 3 — Gore. July 2, 3 — Oamaru. July 3— Central Otago. July 7 — Wyp.dham. July 8, 9 — Waima'e. July 15, 16— Rangiora. July 17 — Tapanui.

— The very full reports of the-Dun-edi:! and Auckland snows, published this wok, niors than monopolis-i the space usually granted for Kennel and Poultry Notes •so with iho exception of a few remarks on the terriers I will hold ever other criticism till next week. If fancier^ will ear-s-fully study the remarks on exhibits by judges They will find tbem both interesting and insfcructiv-3. Mr Crane has promised mo a fuller report upon the dog sections after his return to Sydney, and I may iiavo further remarks to make upon the poultry exhibits in ;he coai*s of a iveek or two.

— The attendance at th-s show \vas r.ot up to expectations, the door money being £21 short of Ids* show and £46 less than the preceding year.

REMARKS ON FOX TERRIERS' AT THE SHOW.

Dopr Puppies. — There, were in this class eight entries. The first and second prizewinners are sired by Mr J. W. Thomson's imported dog Raby Oxly's, and ar3 loh good terriera. but with glaring faults. The,. winner", Patsy, owt-.ed by Miss Ina M'Kon-" zie, is a _«-'.ufl-looking crap, bad hea"d, and ears carried too low, and lather inclined, to be wide in front, but has good body, legs, feet, and % coat". The second prize-winner, Sardonyx, owned. hyM/ Rogen, is a very •smart-looking 'dog," full of terrier chai-acter, with good ear carriage, splendid front, and good cos-t, but very weak behind. This was a very close run, but I am rather inclined to' fancy Sa.-donyx. Miss M'Ken>ie omitting to enter her dog all through lost her opportunity. The third .prizewinner, Rector, the property of Messrs Taylor and Henderson, is a nice bodied dog, but very lengthy in the head, and did not sl-ow himself to the boat advantage in tho ring. He is a eon of eh. Glendon Major, and would be a good stud dog for some of the present-day hitches with their bad oars. Mr Perry's Ruthven Rex, a v.h.c., is very much on the leg .md has a coarse head. In this clas? there wat, a most peculiar doc; owned by Mr Perry He was of the liverm.arking kind having a head of that colour whicli is a disqualification. The rest were of the everyday wpc. In the Novice Dogs' 1 Class we h**l a repeat with the exception of Mr F. Froe-man's Moreland Abbot. Mr Alex. Hastie's Moreland Squire, and Mr P. J. G. Lindsay's Triumph. The first two were bred by Mr J. W. Thomson, and are sons of Double First ex Waikari Pride. Beth are good dogs, but over-sized, too . much on the \eg, and have got bad eye=. J Mr Lindsay secured third prize in this j class with Triumph, who has good body, j coat, legs, and feet, but is cheeky anil j lound on bkull and loaded on the shoul- I ders. He was lucky to get vn front of Rax, and I think his size must have just brought him in a winner. Now Zealand-bred Class.— Two new competitors came into the ring in this class. Tho others were . repeats of former clashes. The newcomers wers Mr Shaiming's. Hauraki Hone Heke and Mr Spenoe"s> Akgirana Acto/. Actor is decidedly the be&t, but his oar carriage is bid, and he is li^ht in bone, but has a good coat and body.

Open Class. —All the dog-s in this cias^ have been dealt with.

P.itchos. — We have firstly the Puppy Class with 11 entries, and some very hot stuff. Taylor and Henderson get first with Gondola and third with Excelda. and Mr Emerson comes, in second with Maitland Runsvwek. I would have placed Taylor and Henderson's Excelda fir-t, Gondola second, and Runswick third. Runswick is on the large size, but a good bitch. TII3 other two are very even. I prefer Excelda, although f4ondola is a very taking bitch, and showed herself beautifully ; but the other bitch has more bone and a much stronger cy 2. Gondola and Excelda are by Double First and Runswick is by eh. Glendon Major. Six of the bitches, including fir-t, second, nnrl third, are all sired by Mr Thomson's btud dog---. In the Novice Bitches 14- entries came before the judge. Here ho discovers not only tho first piize bitch from now on, but the best smooth fox terrier in the show — n?,mely, Mr W. Hender-son/s Moreland Model, a daughter of Double First ex eh. Wakari Pride She is, to put it shortly, a '-egular beauty, tiue to type, but perhaps was shown with rather too much condition on. The other bitches have l.een mentioned above. Tho New Zealanrt-brc-d and Open Classes were . simply repeats. In tho Brace Cla?? we had three entries, but Mr Ho well had a very easy win.

Wire-hairs. -These seem to be improving. The Novice Dogs were three of tha same litter and a very nice lot and fit to nvv.'t anything \is have seen here, excepting- eh. Chingford Nipper. The prizewinner v&s Mr Shand's Sundowner. He is a regular terrier, full of character, has splendid legs and fair feet. a. good coat, nice 4at fkull, might: do with a little moie length of head), but you can't get everything. This dog wins the cup for beat wire-hair in fcha show. The second prize was Mr S'ge's Orama Smith, a terrier full

of character, too much coat, fine straight legs fair feet, rather loaded on the shoulders, and wide in frcrit. Mr Aiken's Wdingawa Bobs has about the best ears a-nd carriage of any fox terrier in the show He aho has plenty of character, and is a very nice sized dog, but a little cheeky a.nd on th? stumpy side. The New Zeakind-brecls were -a, repeat. In the Open Class the newcomer was Mr Bbeppaid's Cottesmora Admiral (imp ). All I can say is that he might have been left in England. In ihe Bi'ch Puppies there were three -entries. Orama Nell, shown by Mr Gso. Sise, the first prize-taker, has a fine long head and very nice front, is a nice size terrier, but inclined to be woolly. Mr E. A. Shand's second arid third were a couple of very nice bitches, and should, if mated with a big dog, throw lrom, ethin,g :farirly gecd. In New Zeakr-id-bi-cd and Open we had Mr Shand's Chingford Roma. She has just about the best •'vi're coat, but was .«hown in indifferent condition. A nice bitch, on the small size, and with bad eyes. It is worthy of note that three of the wires were bred by Mr E Webster, and the remainder were from his bre:d, excepting Cotte&more Admiral.

Taking the fox -terriers all round, they were very .good, and :t: t must be very pleasing to Mr Thomson to see "that most, if not all, of uTe winners are got by his mi porfcations. The test smooth in tho. show was bred by him, and is a real good bite.li. The wire-hairs, I am glad to see, arc improving, and with sports like Mr Shanl and the Sise brother-, they should get a good liff, but I hope to see our old friend Mr Webstar in the ring again next year, whpn he may ha.v« something- good.
