CRUELTY TO A HORSE.
UNSKILFUL TREATMENI. <T«ok Otjb Own Cobkesfondent.) CHRISTCHURCH, January 12. Mr J. R. Charlton, a veterinary surgeon, ' writes to the Lyttelton Times stating that lon the Bth inst. he was requested to examine a horse, tbe property of a Christchurch storekeeper. The anomal was in a, pitiable condition, standing on three legs, emaciated as the result of pain, and suffering excruciating torture. A cursory examination sufficed to justify an order for the i animal's destruction, the poor brute's leg I being broken. On inquiry, he adds, I ' found that the horse met with a.n accident . three weeks previously ; that it had been attended to by an individual who dej scribed himself as a veterinary surgeon, and affixed letters to his name calculated to convey the false impression that he is a member of the Royal College of Veteri- ' nary Surgeons. Not alone did this individual fail to diagnose a fracture, but through his lack of skill or negligence, or ! both, this poor dumb animal was forced to endure prolonged and untold agony, no I proper treatment having been applied. I 1 submit that it is time tbe penal clauses of the Veterinary Surgeons Act of the Imperial Parliament were put in force in . the Dominion.
