ANNUAL REPORT. Th« following clauses appear in the report to be submitted to niembeis of the Athenaeum at the annual meeting on Feb•uary 1 : — The committee has pleasure in submitting Vo the members its report and statement of iccounts for the year ending 31st December, 1908. The income for the year fiom all •ourcea, added to the bank balance from 1907, amounts to £1847 15s 3d, and the expenditure to £1782 14s sd. the year thus closing* with a credit balance of £65 0s lOd. The number of members now on the roll is 1920, as against 1644 at the close of the previous year. The hbra:y now contains 19,111 works, represented by -22,647 volumes. The usual supplementary catalogue of books edded to the library during the year has been printed and may be obtained from the librarian. The total number of books issued from the library during th« year was 81,824. as compared with 74,875 iwued during ISO 7. The details of the issue for the year just closed ar-e as follow — Sciences, 430; useful arts, 488; fine and recreative arts, 356; social and political science, 450; philosophy and religion, 638, history ard geography, 2407 ; biography and correspondence. 2464 ; language and literature, 209; pceiry and drama, 441; miscellaneous work 9 (including magazines in book form), 911; fiction, 73,080. As in tie previous year, the committee arranged a lourse of iectures during the winter months. Th© statement of account* shows that the receipts for the year amounied to £1748 2« Id, of which subscriptions produced £1403 10s 3d, made up ac follows : — Family tickets, £585 le 9d ; yearly tickets, £336" 15a 9d ; fa*if-ye*rly tickets, £308 19s 3d ; quarterly tickets, £301 Os 6d; youths' yearly tickets, £31 10a: youths' half-yearly tickets, £33 12s : visitors' tickets, £6 11s. The prinoipal sterns of expenditure : — Newspapers bought £26 9s; magazines and foreign •papers, £182 14s 9d ; books — locally pur"Ohased £164 2s lOd. purchased at Home $103 10b 4d ; binding, printing, ptc , £102 10b; saUries, £587 10s 2d. The Assets consist of land .and buildings, Octaton (£7000), books (£3000), furniture and fittings (£400), and sundry smaller items.
