HOMING NOTES.
Br Mausta Mealt. The Dunedin Homing Pigeon Club flew off a race last Saturday from Gore — an airline distance of 77 miles. Fifty-one pigeons competed, representing 17 lofts. Mrs A. C Pigeon kindly liberated the birds at 12.30 p.m. A stt»njr south-wester was blowing, and several of the pigeons were blown into th<» telegraph wires at the railway station. The race resulted as follows : — H. O. Baker's Little Nell (time, lhr 33m in ; velocity, 1446 yds 2ft) 1 W. Taylor's Rupee II (time, lhr 35£min ; velocity, 1446 yds lft lin) 2 J. Hmtcrson's Leith Griueite (time, lhv 35min ; velocity, 1444yde Oft 3in) .. . 3 J. Knowles's, jun., Paddy (time, lhr 35min; velocity, H39ydfl lft Bin) ... ♦ W. J. Sewell's Wanaka (time, lhr 3325e0; velocity, 143? yds Oft lOin) 5 The* following also competed: — Meesrs Niven, Umbers, Short, Gore, Hunt, Veitch, Stone, Esquiknt, Reeves, Tattersfield, Gibson, and Yates. Th« steamer Waikare took 14 homing pigeons to the West Coast Sounda last Saturday, to be liberated with messages. Messrs Fred Moore and W. Wilson will liberate the Dunedin Club's birds at Winton next Saturday. Five pigeons were sent to Auckland last weak — Mr Gibson three and Mr R. Umbers two — to compete in the race from that city to Dunedin. Mr Paterson, exDunedinite, will liberate the birds.
