January 18.—The annual meeting of AtihsnsGum subscribers was held in the club room on Monday, 11th inst. There waa a ■good attendance of members, and Mr M. Jamieson occupied tine chaii-. The following report was presented by the secretary: '" During the past year, while endeavouring to maintain the institution i,n a state of efficiency, your committee has kept down, expenditure with a \iew to reducing- the debt caused by enlargement, and it is satisfactory to state that the overdraft hae been reruced from £119 12s 7d to £83 2s 2d. The aithenssurp continues to be well patronised, and was never in a more flourishing condition. The fcubseriber? now number 75, as against 67 the previous jear, 24 taking out yearly subscript ion 6, 9 halfyearly, and 42 quarterly, and <he ticket:, issued during- the year were 2f yearly, 13 half-yearly, and 99 quarterly—a total of 136, wot including 13 visitors' tickets. Sixtyfive new books were added to the library in parcels at -nonitihly intervals, an arrangement which seemec to work more satisfactorily than the oW method of getting one or two large parroels. During the winter months a- series of card matches were arranged, the club winning five out of -ix pla\ed. Three tournaments were also held, to which ladies wore invited. All of these were weJl artended, and afforded muoh pleasure to those present. Owing to various causes the proposed lectures fell through, but it is hoped that- n.ext winter it may be possible to hold meetings of that character. To fill the vacancy caused by the death of Mr Joseph Bates, Mr William M'Dougall, one of the oldest members of the institution, was appointed a trustee in February la&t. After tho various reports submitted had been approved, his Worship the. Mayor (Mr A. Heckler) was voted to the chair, and the following gentlemen were elected a comtm-ittee for the jn.-uing-year:— Messrs William Mudge. B. Hallett, N. Stewart, H. Heckler, R. Templeton, R W. Fell, H. Carbon, M. Jamioson, and G. M'Kerehar. A motion recom.ni on ding the new commii'ttee to increase the quarterly subscriptions to 3s 6d amd tlic 'half-yearly to 5s 6d was carried. Mr J. C. Crocone was appointed as subscribers' auditor. At a meeting of the now -somm.itr.ee, beld subsequently, Mr William Mudge wa* elected chairman, Mr B. W. Fell secretary, Mr M. Jamieson treasurer, aixl Mr Thomas Reid ■the committee's auditor. Messrs Mudge, Stewart, Templtton, and Fell were appointed a Works Committee, and were asked to report at next meeting regarding tire escapes, lighting, and otJier matters. Visitors.—A great many visitors have been m WaJkoua.iti since Christmas Eve, and all the boarding-houses are at present full, and a>re likely to remain -so for some time to come. The weather has, unfortunately, been cokl and showery, and eonserjuontlv sf>a. bathing- has not been &o freelj inckiged hi this summer as in former yeara. The frequent rain has greatly improved th-e appearance of the new tennis courte and bowling green, an<? bh< young grass is now coming away strongly. The handicaps for the gold medal {oresented by Mr Thop. Reid to the Bowling Ohib) have been marie out, and the competition will commence immediately. Mr E. H. Clark", M.P., k also presenting the clur wibh a trophy, and this will be played for later on.
