The sawmillers in Jsew ZeaJand are, generally speaking, in a very serious position, h,aid Mr Mander, M.P., to a Post reporter. Besides the fact that little building is eoing on, and that consequently there is small demand, American timber eaitois into successful competition with the New Zealand article. Tlie only remedy Ls, a, stiff duty, otherwise the sawin ilkrs will have to go into liquidation, and thousands of men will be thrown idle, and millions of feet of valuable timber will c;o up in smoke, because the land mu-st be cleared for settlement, and if the mills are not there to cut it out it must be burned down.
