THE WOMAN AND THE SWORD.

By Rupr.RT .Lorraine. London : Mr T. Fisher Um\in. (Colonial edition.) Some time ago Mr T. Fisher Unwin offered a prize of 100 guineas for the best novel, and the first prize story, " The Woman and the Sword," is now to hand. Always on the look-out for new talent, this enterprising publisher has succeeded so well that he has been able to announce the "' First Novel Library," the work under notice being the fifteenth in the library. A story which gains a prize ot 100 guineas in open competition should be a good one, ancl " The Woman and the Sword " can be so described. The reader is carried in imagination back to the days of the Star Chamber and the religious struggle in Germany. These stormy times enable the author to introduce a good deal of fighting and duelling, an elopement and an abduction, some other exciting and stirring incidents, and a little love-mak-ing. Most of the male characters are soldiers of fortune. Those in search of a novel full of moving incidents by field and flood will find that Mr Unwin's prize novel fills the bill.
