NOTES BY JACK.

The first plaos in the rink match at the Sotnh Otago Centre's New Year tournament was won by the rink skipped by MiBrown. The scores were even with one head to go. At the final end Hislcp's side were lying two shots when the skips crossed over. Hulop touched the jack with his first bowl, ar>d gave Brown's side two shots. He played his second, bowl narrow in trying to retrieve the mishap, and Biown'a rink won the first prize. The "Wellington " Centie'e New Year turnament pro's ed a success, and after their experience of unlimited entries it is not likely the northern association will be sHe to longer continue the policy of limiting the entries for ite tournament to two from each club. There were left in for the semi-finals Prince (twice champion of the N.Z.8.A.), Brackenridge, Norrie, Bell, and Webb. On the sth Prince defeated Bell by 18 to 13, the ex-champion playing- a great game. Brackenridge found his club mate. Webb, a little off colour, and won by 22 to 17. It was not until the ' 7th that the final could be got off. This resulted as follows: — A. Pollock, Sexton, i Wylie, Geo. Prince (Newtown) 32 Wat Hatch, Mack, Bary, Brackenridge (Victoria) ! 14. The green was heavy, and tnis appeared jto affect the Victorian team more than 1 their opponents. Hatch J-ad well, but Mack | and Barv wore light off, and the task j left to the \eteran, Brackenridge (an ojd Otago and Southland player), tco much. Pollock and Wylie played well for Newtown, and Prince i-5 said to ha\e been as steady as a rock. Brackenridge scored at j eight ends and Prince at 13. The former ! secured three on three occasions. Prince «ecurcd two s's, two 4's, and a 3. The Wellington Centre, and 'especially its secretary, Mr Churchward, were warmly ■oni gratulated on the success of the tourna- , ment, which gave the maximum of pleasure at a minimum of expense. The Welling- | ton. Club placed 10 rinks at the disposal of the centre. | Four rinks from the Southland Club jour--1 neyed to Riverton to play the first match of the season on the Riverton Green. Quite 1 unexpectedly the Rivertonians won in every rink, the total scores being:— Riverton, 89; Southland, 63. Hackworth put down W. Martin, one of the "All While" team by 28 to 14-, and Forsyth accounted for Taylor, i who had Loggett as third player, by 20 rto 16. Beer defeated Ayling by 22 to i 19, and Willett put down Kingsland by lfl to 14.
