CHRISTCHTRCH COMPETITIONS.
CHEISTCHURCH, January 7. The Competitions Society's contests are proceeding, but there is no general interest. The entrants are almost wholly 1 local, with the exception of one or two - i Dunedin ladies, who won almost every--1 thing they entered for. Only two choirs have entered, both local. Twelve tenor soloists sang to-day, the solo being j " Songs of Araby." Mr C. N. Baeyertz | (the judge) said the event Had been a surprise to him. It had been nothing like as good in Dunedin, where there had never been so good an entry (17), nor I such good singing. The elocutionary contest took place this afternoon, the reading being Psalm ciii. There were 18 entries.
Some amusement was caused at a cricket ; match in Wangsanui (says the Chronicle) by the sudden appearance of a. hare on the field of play. The startled anima! made a beo-line for the pavilion, and players and spectators tried to corner the fugitive, which was just missed by Wordsworth, who happened to be in possession of the ball at the time. Swerving frcm a straight run, however, the hare made a " break " for the fence, and maintaining a fast pace, coon reached the boundary, and was neither caught nor bowled.
